It sounds to me that your switch just switches on and off the phone company since you plan on hooking your adapter to a distribution port. If this is correct then you take the chance that someone flips the switch and fries your adapter.

Switches are not typically used in this situation. You would be better served by something that allowed you to use Vonage and POTS simultaneously whether you have one on line 1 and the other on line 2 or you distribute it to different jacks.

One option would be to bring POTS and Vonage into your distribution cabinet and then patch the lines to your distribution block. I accomplished this by adding a wall jack at my distribution panel. The wall jack has a coax port for the cable modem, an RJ-11 port for the Vonage adapter and two RJ-45 ports from the router to the rest of the house. (The router, adapter and cable modem are all outside the box.)

Doing this allowed me to operate POTS and Vonage simultaneously with POTS on line 1 & 2 while my number ported. When my number ported I was able to easily swap Vonage to line 1. Additionally since all the lines are terminated inside the distribution box there is no way to accidentally connect POTS to my adapter.

But, if you do decide to use a switch you should really make sure it switches between POTS and Vonage.
