It is possible to lock up a Linux box remotely using Vonage service.

Here is the setup I have:

RT31P2 <- WRT54G <- Cable Modem
Linux <-|

The WRT54G is running Sveasoft Alchemy Pre7a. Linux box is running Fedora Core 3 (no firewall since it is behind the WRT54G). There are no specific holes in the WRT54G for the RT31P2 since it worked out-of-the-box.

I ordered a fax line for port 2 of the RT31P2 yesterday. Within a few minutes, the Linux box locked up hard. Screen froze, inputs froze and unable to ping box from a wireless laptop. I hard reset the Linux box. When it rebooted, I logged in and tried to access the internet again. The box worked fine until I access the internet with the web browser (Firefox) and then it locked up hard again. I checked the lights on the WRT54G and it shows Internet Activity. I checked the lights on the RT31P2 and it also shows activity. I reset the Linux box again. It comes up fine. I log into the WRT54G and everything looks fine. I log into the RT31P2 and it already shows the fax line active. I recheck the routers and the lights no longer show activity to the Internet. I use the Linux box to access the internet and everything is fine now.

What gives? Vonage updating the RT31P2 behind a WRT54G locks up Linux when the web browser access the Internet?

On the bright side, Qwest can eat the heart out. Vonage installed my new line within 10 minutes of it being ordered. So long 7 day waiting period!
