It Works! Without the WRT54G in between

That's okay though. I originally had it that way but the internet performance was so bad I put the WRT54G back into the mix. However it appears with the latest (non-stone age) firmware on the WRTP54G that the performance problem was solved.

Don't know what's up with my WRT54G but I'm not going to worry about it now.

Thanks again for all your help.

*Might* be a defect, or it might be a performance issue instead. With both the modem/router AND the WRT54G in the path, you have a situation of double DHCP, double NAT, and also double DNS resolution probably occuring. If I run an IPCONFIG on my computer here, it says my DNS server is 192.168.1.1, which is the WRT54G. The WRT itself has the correct DNS server addresses at Comcast, but the computer has to first make a request of the router, then the router has to make a request of the real DNS server to resolve. Now, add yet another local router into the path, and you can see what's starting to happen. Now, what version is the WRT? It might be one of the older v1's with a slower CPU. At any rate, its possible the delays might be long enough to trigger a timeout within the local IP stack, although I'm just speculating now.

If it were me, I'd try to figure out how to turn off all routing within the modem/router and just use it as a modem, with the WRT doing the routing (with the latest HyperWRT firmware, of course). But of course if its now working well for the original poster, I sure understand "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." :-)
