Vonage Interesting position posted at Vonage: Job Description: Kernel Hackers

Interesting position posted at Vonage: Job Description: Kernel Hackers Wanted: Do you use linux at home? Extra credit if you've installed a version of bsd (no, OS X® does not count). Are you paranoid enough to know the network is unreliable. Do you know how many transactions your systems processed today? Extra credit if you measure in thousands per second. Is your watch synched to NTP? Extra credit if it displays in UTC. Do you know the classic meaning of "hacker" and are you proud to call yourself one? We need a few premier hackers to help define the next-generation evolution of our highly scalable, distributed and robust call processing infrastructure. We need hackers with prior experience with some combination of the following: C, C++, Python, Perl, and SQL. What we are NOT looking for: We are not looking for a Windows programmer or administrator. It is nice if you have Windows skills but they are not a substitute for Unix skills. This is a Unix/Linux job. We are not looking for someone who wants to work in an environment with very formal development paradigms and the even more expensive tool suites that come along with these paradigms. We are not looking for someone who wants to do GUI or web page development. We are not looking for an entry level person. What we are looking for: We are looking for someone with experience supporting dozens, hundreds or even thousands of geographically distributed Unix or Linux servers running lights out/hands off. We are looking for someone who is an independent and creative thinker, but works well as part of a team. We are looking for someone who realizes that while it is ok to enjoy one's job and even have some fun at work, also understands that the workplace is a place of work. We are looking for someone who realizes that the sign of a really good systems team is that their work is not fully appreciated or understood by the rest of the company. We are looking for omeone who expects to do 95% of their work in a text based environment. Position Overview: Implement and deploy Vonage's call processing and call delivery infrastructure consisting of both customer facing and internal assets including SIP Proxy, Media Relay and provisioning for network and CPE components all operating in a highly distributed computing environment. Design, write and/or maintain various Unix/Linux user space programs, kernel modules, as well as Perl and shell scripts. A significant portion of the position is designing, writing and/or maintaining various user space programs, kernel modules, and scripts written primarily in C, perl, shell, and tcl/tk. The successful candidate must be an expert C programmer capable of writing UNIX (Solaris) or Linux kernel modules. The successful candidate will almost certainly consider himself/herself a "Unix Kernel Hacker." Job Requirements Technical skills: • Expert programming skills in C • Competent with Lex, YACC, awk • Expert network programming skills, including development with epoll and highly multithreaded programming environments.. • Expert scripting/programming skills in sh, tk/tcl/expect, Perl • Database programming/administration skills including generic SQL and ORACLE/MySQL specifically • Expert TCP/IP network administrator including familiarity with IPv6. Vonage is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
