Vonage In my line of work, I have to hear several customers complain saying that they did

In my line of work, I have to hear several customers complain saying that they did not know this or that about Voip telephone services. Seriously, if you're not sure about the service, why not take your time and thoroughly do some research on it BEFORE you sign up for it? This way you'll KNOW what you're getting into, and will save lots of money on Tylenol, Advil, etc. Also, don't just jump into the pool before you make sure it's filled with water first...

Based on my experience, here's a short list what you should do and know before investing time and energy in the Voip industry...

1) Seriously, go do some thorough research on the services. Some are available in your area, some are not. Some have local numbers or particular features in your area, some don't. Almond Joy's got nuts, Mounds don't. If necessary, call up their main Customer Service centers and ask the agents questions. It'll help you out in the long run... trust me!

2) If you know someone who has the service that you are researching, try talking to them in depth about it. However please be aware that some other people's services (such as Internet) may be different from yours, so don't be surprised if your service doesn't work as well as theirs does.

3) Terms of service. If they have them listed on the website take time and seriously READ them, PLEASE! The more you know the better off you'll be! If they are not there ask for a copy to be faxed, E-Mailed or postal mailed out to you and I'm sure they will do it!

4) Number transferring - please understand that some companies have different policies regarding transferring existing phone numbers to and from their company. Thoroughly check them out before you do this! Also, please remember that they have internal departments that are transferring the numbers to other companies so screaming at the poor customer service agent won't get you very far. Nor will complaining to the manager. Best thnig to do is wrote a letter to the corporate office.

5) Service termination policies - All Voip companies have them. They may be in the terms of service but they are there on the websites somewhere. If they're not listed, go ahead and call the company and ask questions to make sure.

6) Billing - Same as termination policies. Also, be aware of HOW they bill, and what taxes will apply and what they charge you FOR with their services, such as 911 service.

7) Outsourcing & growth - remember, many of the Voip companies are in the process of re-organizing to make customer serivce better for ALL of us. Please do not give the customer service agent a hard time if there is a long wait. They REALLY are trying to help everyone out as best as they can, and giving the agent a hard time won't help your case any. EVERYBODY HAS TO WAIT ON HOLD ONCE IN A WHILE! There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule, no matter who you are!

8) Professional courtesy from customers - be courteous to the customer service agent you speak to. You might be able to get more information out of them if you are nice to them. Believe me this one WILL help you out!! If the agent is rude to you, even when you are nice to them, defintely ask for a manager or their supervisor and complain to them directly either on the phone or in an E-Mail. Compliments also follow the same rule as well..

9) This is a mostly DO-IT-Yourself service when it comes to setting this up. Do not always expect some glorified knight in shining armor to come and install the service for you. Will never happen. Also, do not always pay attention to what is on the CD-ROMs that come with the devices, they usually lead you astray. Easiest way to do this is to simply turn off your network (Modem and PC in many cases), hook up the device, and then turn everything back on one at a time. If all else fails, call customer service!

10) If you need to also install more than one phone you should also check to see what options are available to do this. Be prepared to spend some money to do it now, but you will save a lot of money and possible grief in the long run once your set up has been completed. Try searching for "Multiple Extensions" on Voip service's website. It does help!

If you keep these items in mind you'll find that you'll be a smarter Voip customer in the long run, and in the end, you will have a better experience with your NEW Voip service.
