In my case, I simply purchased a WRT54G (now known as the WRT54GL, the WRT54G has changed hardware since), and loaded aftermarket firmware known as HyperWRT Tofu on it. My network has run like a top since I made this move.
The WRTP54G is still sitting there, acting as a quite excellent Vonage device, with the wireless turned off and not really doing any sort of data routing, sitting safely and quietly behind my WRT54G. In other words, it's a Vonage device with a lot of extra fancy blinky bits that never actually get used. ;)
The WRTP54G and RTP300 are exactly the same router, with the sole addition of wireless to the WRTP54G. I wouldn't actually run a heavily used network on either of them, so you aren't going to help anything by going to a RTP300, unless you are looking to just save the cost difference between the WRTP54G and the RTP300.
And, heck, the WRTP54G does work, as long as you don't run BitTorrent on it or expect fully functional QoS. So it's a nice box to have around in case your main router fries or has major problems, at the very least.
