Vonage If the machine running the bittorrent client is connected to the outermost router,

If the machine running the bittorrent client is connected to the outermost router, then you only need to do port forwarding on that router. If the machine running the bittorrent client is connected to the innermost router, then you'll have to do port forwarding on both, and you'll be dealing with double NAT.

If everything will work with the VT2442 alone (leaving out the WRT54G for the moment), then make it the outermost router. You can also use the WRT54G, not as a router, but as a WiFi gateway, by making sure that only one of the two routers is doing DHCP, that the LAN addresses use the same subnet but different IPs, outside the DHCP range, and connecting the LAN port of the WRT54G to the LAN port of the VT2442, and not connecting anything at all to the WAN port of the WRT54G. The WRT54G is now just a switch and WiFi bridge, and knows nothing about protocols, ports, etc., at a level that you should normally care about.

Then the VT2442 will make sure that your voice traffic gets enough priority so that it sounds ok.

If you must have the WRT54G as the outermost router, then you have two options: 1: Get QOS/TOS software for it, maybe OpenWRT, so that it saves enough bandwidth for Vonage when the Bittorrents are running or 2: put the Bittorrent client on the LAN side of the VT2442 and let the VT2442's QOS service make sure the torrents don't eat all your bandwidth.

One other way: What I do, with Azureus, is use the Azureus max bandwidth settings to be sure that Azureus itself limits the amount of my 20Mb down/5 Mb up are being used. I let Azureus have about 4Mb down and 3Mb up. You probably don't have that much bandwidth (Verizon FiOS is NICE), and will have to limit it even more. Also, don't forget to multiply the Azureus numbers by 8 since they're in Bytes, not bits.

Well that would depend on whether your router has QoS traffic shaping queues only
Port forwarding/opening should be an issue of work/not work, not an issue of performance/quality.
QoS shaping on inbound would only help if he was suffering from LAN congestion/overload.
