If the echo problem is heard by the remote user then the problem is occurring at YOUR end of the connection.
It is quite possible that this echo is occurring when people call on your landline however the delay is so short that it sounds like the normal "sidetone" you would get on a phone (i.e. deliberate feedback from mouthpiece to earpiece to control the volume of your voice). Voip introduces more delay and makes the echo more obvious.
Echo can be caused by several problems:-
- A traditional phone has a two wire connection to the phone network - hence you are actually sending and receiving signals over the same pair of wires. This is only possible as the characteristics of those wires (impedance) and the phone are known and hence the CO or gateway can "disentangle" the signals. If the wiring or the phone have different characteristics then it can make the process of separating the signals harder. Gateways often have echo cancellers - note that the echo canceller in your gateway is trying to cancel the echo from your side of the gateway (i.e. to help the person at the other end).
- Acoustic echo is audio feedback from the speaker in your handset to the microphone. Echo can be caused by you simply holding the handset away from your ear - hence your ear is not "muting" the sound from the speaker. Again - this is quite common however on regular phone calls we don't notice as the delay is so short.
