If I understand correctly you want to leave your Vonage device at home (or work), and access it over the VPN connection. I have not tried something like that, but I do use a VPN connection to encrypt my conversations.
This is the way I have it setup. I use OpenVPN to set up a layer 2 tunnel between a Linux box I have at my University Apartment and a Linux server I have at a co-location in New York. They provide ~86mbit/s (this is the speed I got when I tested it). The Linux server at my apartment has two ethernet ports. One is connected to the University network; the other my private network. With the tunnel open to my server in New York, all the computers see it as part of the local network on the same subnet. Essentially the second port on my Linux box becomes a wire that runs all the way to New York. The tunnel is transparent, all i have to do is hook up a computer to my switch, and its traffic goes over the tunnel. All traffic goes though the tunnel encrypted, and out to New York. I do this to keep people from eavesdropping on my connection. Ive had this happen before.
The difference in what I have and what you are trying to do is the location of the Voip device. On my network the device is with me hooked up to the switch. If I read your post correctly, I think you are trying to use the device remotely. Please correct me if I am wrong.
If you are trying to set up something similar to what I have I might be able to help you out.
