Vonage If I could rougly estimate the sources of problems that I deal with daily, the breakdown

If I could rougly estimate the sources of problems that I deal with daily, the breakdown would be the following:

78% ISP-related (including modem)
15% setup or install (including network equipment OTHER than the modem or phone adapter)
5% phone adapter leading to replacement
2% Vonage network problem (this includes PSTN/CLEC connections) - SERIOUSLY - No, really seriously.

#1 cause of problems is "network jitter". #2 is packet loss. These both lead to the same thing: choppy audio. The biggest hurdle is when a non-technically-inclined customer calls their ISP (usually cable company) and report a problem with the connection. Generally, the ISP "pings" the modem, has the customer open a web page, and tells them that their internet service is working fine. Mention Vonage and some ISPs will just hang up on you now EVEN WHEN ITS CLEARLY ON THEIR END. Case in point, several calls from customers with Comcast Cable. The cable modem's status lights shows no connection to cable network (the modem will sync even with no computer or router connected). Cable company problem, right? Mention Vonage and Comcast tells you that its Vonage's fault, regardless of the problem.

Cable companies hate us for two reasons: we undercut their own Voip service (both price and more features) and their customers are now demanding that they provide the level of internet connection they were sold.

Besides cable companies (other than Cablevision who I hardly ever get calls about), the biggest thorn in my side are routers with SPI firewalls. Those things seriously mess stuff up and don't really give you any extra security. Second to that is heat. Overheating hardware causes a variety of problems.

In any case, I have had absolutely no problems (audio or otherwise) with my Vonage phone lines. Here's my setup:

Verizon DSL > Westell Wirespeed 2100 > Linksys WRT54Gv2 > 2 PAP2 adapters, 1 "other" Vonage adapter, Linksys 8-port gigabit switch, PCs and printers

So all together I have 4 Vonage lines (3 voice and 1 fax) and am able to use all of them simultaneously without any degragation of audio quality. The PAP2s are both set up with QoS priority and the SPI firewall is turned off on the WRT54G. Its running the latest Linksys firmware. My download speed is approximately 1.5mbps (I'm paying for 3mbps so I'm going to have to bust some skulls at Verizon) and upload speed is approximately 450kbps. Latency and jitter is very good and that is really what matters most. Lately my DSL modem has been losing sync so I'm going to need to check some stuff out when I have the chance.
