If I am understanding your situation correctly Darla, if your roommates want to get AIM phoneline so that they could have their own phone number and hence privacy, it will give them some privacy although they will have to use their computer with a microphone and speakers instead of a regular phone. If they want to make calls, they will have to pay the $9.95/month.
If they get AIM phoneline, then your Vonage account will not register their calls and hence it will provide them with some level of privacy. Vonage only keeps track of phone calls made through their adapter. Calls made through programs like skype, AIM phoneline, etc will not get detected nor registered by your Vonage account.
However, do realize that if everyone is on the phone at the same time, you will need to make sure that your Internet connection has enough bandwidth to handle all the simulataneous calls. Vonage in its highest setting takes up 90kbps both upload and download.
Most cable internet connections can handle around 256 - 384 kbps upload which means you could handle about 2 Vonage phone calls (if you have the 256kbps upload) at the same time without running into choppy calls etc. If all 3 of you are on the phone at the same time with you on Vonage and your 2 roommates on AIM phone line, I would think that there would be issues of call quality. I don't know how much bandwidth AIM takes but it will start to add up.
