Vonage I would suggest that you leave your landline phones connected until the port has

I would suggest that you leave your landline phones connected until the port has completed. That will also give you some time to test Vonage and see if it meets your needs. Also, since you must be paying for them, you should at least have them available for back up purposes.

You may want to reduce the landline plans to the cheapest ones possible until the porting takes place. Then you can just unconditionally forward them to their counterpart Vonage lines using the temporary numbers Vonage has assigned to you. People will be able to reach you on your Vonage by calling either your old numbers or your temporary Vonage numbers.

If I had to guess I'd expect your LNP would take about 5 to 8 weeks. It could happen sooner, but it could also be much longer. If you search on LNP on these forums you'll find lots of first-hand reports. Maybe you can find one from your own area - because the experience differs greatly from carrier to carrier and from region to region.

While you are waiting for the LNP, if you need additional extensions you can use simple splitters plugged into the phone ports on your adapter. Or you could buy cordless phones with extra handsets. (That's what I use, because I kept my old Verizon landline service in addition to my two Vonage lines.)

I'm a fan of Vonage but there are some things you will miss without a landline:

1. 911 does not work the way you expect.
2. You cannot include our name on outgoing caller ID, so some businesses (credit card companies, for example) will not allow you to conduct business by phone or to activate credit cards.
3. Your number will not be listed in national directory services like 411. (For some time after the LNP, you will continue to be listed because of your old phone service. But Vonage numbers are not listed, and yours may disappear from the databases when they are updated.)
4. You cannot accept collect calls.
5. Some fax machines will not work with Vonage - even with the special fax lines Vonage provides.
6. It is difficult to get some home security systems like Brinks to connect to a Vonage line. (There is a fix for this, I think, but it is not automatic.)
7. It is difficult (or impossible) to get TIVO to work with Vonage. Again, some folks have been able to make it work, but with some technical effort.
8. If you power goes out, you will probably loose Vonage service (unless you have a generator or Uninterruptable Power Supply), whereas old fashioned phone services draw power over the phone lines from phone companies that use generators. POTS (plain old telephone services) tend to be much more reliable in power outages than Voip - unless a tree falls across the lines coming into your house. :) If you have a cell phone for emergencies, that is not as serious a problem as when Vonage is your only service.
9. Vonage service is very much dependent on your internet connection, and you can have some service problems due to congestion on the Internet beyond your control or even Vonage's.

Hope some of that helps in your planning. I recommend keeping one cheap POTS linee if people can afford it. I some areas you can get basic phone service for as little as $20 per month.

Good luck.

Fletcher

We are having a few difficulties with the setup - I can call out on my Siemens 8825
are both of these new, vonage assigned numbers? can you try with a different phone? also,
Kathy, I can't give you much help right now, but be careful about connecting
We did disconnect the wires at the box. The lines were all dead before we connected
If your numbers are still with your previous carrier, they won't ring on your vonage
I'm glad you knew to disconnect the telco lines first. I think Martlet has
So, should I reconnect my lines or leave it as is and wait...
Kathy, Help us understand where you are in the process. 1. I assume you
