I would say that the "simple" solution here would be to replace your router with a WiFi enabled router and run the phone directly off of that. It would give you the advantage of not being dependent on the PC (in case of the PC being off or neding a reboot) for internet access for the phone.

If you want to try connecting this way - then the next question would be if the phone really is not seeing the PC or if it is not connecting. If the PC is set to only connect to 802.11g devices, then it will reject the phone (Vonage phones have 802.11b only). Also, depending on he security of the ad-hoc network - the PC may also not allow the phone to link.
