Vonage I would not recommend AOL DSL at all. It requires that you be logged into the AOL

I would not recommend AOL DSL at all. It requires that you be logged into the AOL service on your computer to get a valid connection. You CAN get it to work with Vonage BUT it will not be easy at all and Vonage will not really be able to assist you with it as they say they are not compatible with AOL DSL. This is what you will have to go through if you want to get AOL connected with Vonage: Sign in AOL to get a connection, log into Vonage adapter, turn on PPPoE and set the username and pass of your AOL account currently logged in. Now, if you ever log off of your AOL account on your computer, your phone will stop working. Also, if this happens you have the repeat the procedure again and may have to play around with it to get it to work as it is not an exact science as AOL does not want you using anything but your computer.

If you want to stick with DSL just get a dry loop connection from your local carrier. It will be cheaper than AOL DSL and work much better with Vonage. If you are looking to get away from your local loop carrier I would suggest cable internet, it is faster than DSL and also works very well with Vonage.

Also, the reason this most likely happened is because you had DSL service with someone other than your direct phone carrier(yahoo). Vonage sends the transfer request to AT&T, they look at your account and check for any features that would prevent a transfer(DSL, ring master, distinctive ring, slam protection) as you did not have the DSL directly with they it would not appear on your account. Thus, the saw no problems and released your number. Vonage should have asked you about your DSL before this transfer, but most likely their sales team doesn't even understand what DSL is, all they know is you need a credit card and a broadband connection. This is also why they give you a free month to start off, incase any issues occur during a transfer or setup you aren't paying for the downtime.
