Vonage I was wondering if because Vonage info is transmitted over the public internet

I was wondering if because Vonage info is transmitted over the public internet that the Comcast Digital Voice network would tend to be more secure/private (i.e., less chance of the data being read or looked at).

For example, I recently was dealing with a credit bureau and had to input my social security number into the telephone. Does this mean my SSN is being transmitted across the public internet with Vonage?

Does anyone have any knowledge/expertise about this that can fill me in? Would Comcast be a better Voip provider if evaluated strictly on the security of the transmitted data?
