Vonage I've perused through various posts and found information regarding this router



I've perused through various posts and found information regarding this router and the different setups for QoS that *should* be used. However, I still can't find a combination of the two.

Bleeding or Choking of Service with Internet Activity & Phone Calls
I've heard numerous negative reviews in regards to this router after the fact. Many say to just disable it as a router altogether and instead use it as a generic hub. This defeats the purpose of my purchasing the specific model. Unfortunately, as Vonage was unwilling to assist me in trading it, etc, I stayed with it and found a workaround to my problem.

The original problem was that if I connected my computer to this modem as it is by default set up, then I get odd spurts in internet speeds and any phone calls are effectively poor in quality and bled out. The internet and the calls drown each other out to the point of no internet or phone service working. This is without any sort of downloads going, but happens with even the most basic of web browsing.

Having learned of the poor quality of this router's setup in this regard, I used a second router of a different brand to act as the go-between. Oddly enough, I can now generally browse, but any sort of downloads (including small ones) will bleed out the phone call to the point of severe static and cutting out. As such, I must stop everything still to hold a phone conversation, but at least both services don't die simultaneously.

This arrangement generally works, but it is unsatisfactory. Having learned more with regards to network setup, I wish to try out something new. I also though that setting up the QoS would assist in my endeavors of higher phone call quality.

QoS Set Up for Voip
My second and more recent problem (as I decided to put it off before) is setting up the QoS in preference of not drowning out my phone calls. Please keep in mind I have a high-speed broadband cable connection of 5MB with a decent upload of over 512KB. There should be *no* issues with the amount of 'space' available to download and use the phone on the broadband connection.

In the Linksys WRTP54G, a wireless model that was toted by Vonage as being a great deal and superb model, there is but a single area to set up any QoS settings. As released by other users, the port information I have found is copied below.

Vonage ports:

Port 5060-5061 UDP - For SIP signaling. This is needed for incoming
and outgoing. Requests on port 5060-5061 are made into the network and
made out of the network. The ATA listens on port 5060-5061 and
receives requests on port 5060-5061 UDP for incoming calls. The ATA
sends requests to our servers on port 5060-5061 UDP to make phone
calls.


Port 69 UDP - For tftp so the ATA can retrieve new configuration
settings as updates occur. The ATA makes requests to our tftp servers
on port 69 and the replies should be allowed back into the network from
our tftp servers, this is automatic in a regular state based
Firewall/NAT environment.


Ports (10,000 - 20,000) UDP - For RTP media streams. These are the
ports used to send and receive audio on the ATA. The ATA initiates the
audio streams so the same rules as port 69 apply.


Port 123 UDP - For time. The ATA gets its time from the Internet.
This is the port that it sends request on to retrieve its local time
from the Internet. The ATA will be making/initiating the requests so
the same rules as port 69 apply.


This means it would be most endearing to prioritize ports 5060, 5061, and 10,000 through 20,000. However, the QoS screen provided by the router offers no Voip preset, and very generic presets as listed below. There is an option for the level of priority and only three (3) spots to include a specific port to setup. However, there is NO place to assign a range.

Are there any suggestions as to how to get about this or override the settings somehow? Or perhaps some response to my original problem of the call bleeding. I am a downloader and do not wish to have to stop everything everytime I wish to make or receive a call. Granted, limiting such activity is always helpful, but I should not have such excessive choking of services.
