I've got mine hooked up to my inside phone wiring, and aside from the reboot issue (not related to this issue) it works fine.
There's just one VERY important thing to remember. Make absolutely sure that there is no power in your phone lines. Either disconnect the telco's test jack, or better yet, cut the line, on your side of the demarcation point (never touch Ma Bell's lines). Use your tester to verify that there's no power to any of the jacks that you'll be using.
I actually work in Voip for another company. Looking at the specs for the Motorola box, the loop current, Max loop length, and REN (Number of phones that can be on that line... basically) are identical to the equipment we use to offer primary line telephone service. In short this means that it will work.
The second port on the Vonage box will not work unless you can convince Vonage to hook it up as another number (usually fax only.)
In a nutshell, to hook Vonage to line one in your home, connect a patch cord between port 1 on the Vonage box to your inside wiring. Red goes to Red, Green goes to Green.
To hook it to line 2 in your home, Red from the Vonage box connects to Yellow in your home, while Green from the Vonage box connects to Black in your home.
Look this up on a search to be sure, but if you have Blue/White and White/Blue (cat 3 or 5 inside wiring), Blue/White equals Green, and White/Blue equals Red. For line 2 Orange/white = Yellow, and White/Orange = Black.
If you need assistance, find someone who knows a bit about phone wiring, or a good book. Often your telephony company's repair center may answer questions if you ask them the right way. (I.E. I'm thinking about getting a second line and I was wondering how to wire a jack for my computer... etc)
Time Life's home improvement series - Electrical wiring book has some good info on phone wiring, and should be sufficient. Just make sure there is NO POWER in your home telephone wiring. That's what'll fry the unit.
