I've been working on this idea for some time, but only recently had the opportunity to begin execution. The basic idea is using a landline phone and a wireless data connection that acts like a cellphone. Conceptually and as a joke, my bro and I will be putting together a device to be used at a large convention later next year. It'll consist of a backpack, UPS, Voip router, laptop, and rotary dial phone. We'll be connected to the internal wireless network the hotel provides. With this, we'll effectively be able to pick up this primitive phone and use it as a cellphone. That's the impractical version, but it will be amusing.
The practical version is that I want to connect a cordless phone base to my laptop, keep the phone in my pocket, and laptop w/ wireless nic in vehicle. It's effectively a mobile cell tower pending I'm in a wireless hotspot. I see roaming Voip as the future of wireless communications. The benefits to this are big savings in usage charges. As wireless communications gain a foothold and the wireless infrastructure grows, so will the demand for this kind of application. A step farther is having one number be active over multiple IP's, and the one that responds is in control.
The problem currently: softphone doesn't give you the cordless hardware to take with you when you're away from the laptop. Remember the laptop is supposed to be an access point, not a peripheral. Doesn't appear there's any programs out there yet that support this operation. I'd like to get the word out now and have you guys thinking about it.
What about driving around and making calls? I personally have absolutely no problem with pulling over, locking into a hotspot, and making a call. You're not supposed to be driving and talking on the phone anyway, right?
