I've been using Vonage for almost a year now with few problems. A few weeks ago I started noticing excessive static on the line during calls, so much so that I have trouble hearing the other party. I haven't changed my network configuration or added any devices to my network. The static is audible even when I pick up the receiver and listen to the dialtone, before I start placing a call.

Here's my configuration:

dsl -> befsr41 -> wap11 -> my computers
-> rtp300 -> cordless phone


I'm in Mountain View, CA, with AT&T Yahoo! DSL "Pro" service (1.5Mbps down, ~400Kbps up) using a Speedstream 4100. Vonage gave me a Linksys RTP300. Because the RTP300 doesn't pass through IPsec, I use a Linksys BEFSR41 as my primary router and have the RTP300 connected through the BEFSR41.

The first Vonage tech I spoke to had me connect the RTP300 directly to the DSL modem. The static went away, but returned after several minutes of being on the call. He changed some settings on his end ("adjusting codecs"?) and the static went away.

However, I can't leave it in this configuration for long because I need to IPsec passthru to connect to my work VPN. So I went back to my original configuration and it's noisier than ever. The next tech I spoke to said that I have to open up some ports on my 3rd party router in order to make the static go away. (Is that really true?) So I tried putting the RTP300 in the DMZ of the BEFSR41, but there doesn't appear to be any effect. He also had me reconfigure the network so that the RTP300 was connected directly to the DSL modem, and again, the line was clear for a few minutes. But as we talked, the static increased so much that eventually he heard it too. He finally recommended that I try with a different telephone handset.

Short of going out and buying a new phone, are there any other ideas of things to try? Thanks in advance.
