I use PhoneTray free very successfully with Vonage. I assume you have a PC, I think it doesn't work with Apple.
Modem: If you look at forum for PhoneTray Free, they suggest Hiro V.92 56K External USB Modem. I bought one for about $20 on ebay.
Disclaimer: PhoneTray Free isn't exactly plug and play. That is, you have to get used to how to set it up to do what you want. There will inevitably be cases of accidentally zapping calls from your relatives, etc. until you understand all the settings and features. Nonetheless, I think it's terrific.
