I call it blacklisting because it seems to be more than just stupid. I can't believe they are that stupid. :)

It's a valid telephone number that has been in use for years (my wife says her brother has had it for at least 4 years) - but Vonage refuses to even try to connect to it, saying it's not in service - which is a lie. What gives Vonage the right to refuse to even try to ring the number? If I have a phone service, I decide who I call, not my phone company.

Why not just try to connect to the number? I like Vonage, I've had them for a 18 months, so I am not ferocious critic, but this is the silliest thing I've ever heard. Why even keep such an idiotic database that will most likely always be wrong? If a customer cancels Vonage, most likely they will get service somewhere else! yet, Vonage tries to prevent their current customers from trying to call that former customer by saying their phone number is not in service? Says who? If I call that number with my cell phone (MetroPCS) or my work phone (AT&T) or a friend's home phone (BellSouth, most likely) - it rings and connects. Only Vonage refuses to even try - therefore I use the term "blacklisted". Those other phone enttities do what I request when I punch in the numbers - and hey there's someone on the other end. Vonage blacklists the number.
