I think I am in a very similar situation. I have been using a Motorola VT1005 adapter from day one. Vonage sent me a refurbushed replacement for an early failure and it has been working ever since.

My installation is: ISP -> DSL modem -> Vonage ATA -> Switch -> everything else.

My issue is with the limited router function configuration that is available in the VT1005. I have some devices on my LAN where I was assigning static IP addresses, and [apparently] the VT1005 DHCP server will not handle a mix of static and dynamic IPs. Since I couldn't set a start and end range for the DHCP server, I started getting IP conflicts.

Technical support was very considerate and tried to be very helpful. Their solution was to send me a V-Portal ATA to replace the VT1005 so I could set the start and end ranges in its DHCP server and avoid any IP conflicts.

I received the new device and swapped it out last week. I am NOT impressed. Previously my phone audio quality and internet access was great but, all of a sudden, everything went to the pits. My call quality was TERRIBLE; choppy and broken, and my internet slowed to a crawl with numerous drops and loss of connection. Since my internet speed tests were great, I don't understand why.

I have spent hours with technical support this week. They have tried lots of fixes (or whatever they do) from their end, but all to no avail. The service would work great while I was talking to technical support but, within a few hours after we finished, I had the same problems.

In my opinion the problem was that the V-Portal was the problem, but I couldn't convince anyone.

Last night I had enough, so I swapped out the V-Portal for a Motorola VT2142 that I picked up at WalMart. I can set the start and end ranges in its DHCP server to avoid IP conflicts (the original issue), and everything seems to be working GREAT. So far, no more choppy or broken voice calls, and my internet connection is back to its speedy self with NO dropped connections or IP conflicts with other devices on my LAN.

I will make sure everything keeps working over the weekend, then give them a call in case they want their V-Portal device back. IMO the V-Portal was my problem and it certainly doesn't live up to expectations. (I say that to be polite because I think it's a LOUSY device.) For me, the Motorola VT1005 is a GREAT device and its single-port router will work well for simple LANs. So far (less than 24 hours), the Motorola VT2142 is working great, too. I think it will work well for my [slightly more complicated] simple LAN.
