Vonage I recently moved from an apartment where I had DSL to a house with a cable modem.
I recently moved from an apartment where I had DSL to a house with a cable modem. I initialy wanted to keep my phone number, but in the end decided it was not worth it. I am a former Verizon On-Line employee so I discussed this with some friends who work over there stil and this is what we came up with:
Step 1. Call DSL Provider and tell them you want a second phone line with a new number. Have DSL service moved to this number.
Step 2. Once the new line is up and running, ask Vonage to port the original number, they will work with your local telco and will cancel the original line once the port is complete.
Your local DSL provider will undoubtedly charge you soemthing, but the charges may be minimized r reduced because they think you are ordering more services from them.
In the end, I decided it was much simpler to just get a new number, not to metion much cheaper since you ahve to keep paying for al the POTS lines untill the port is complete whihc can take some time as we ahve all seen.
One note of hope, cell phone companies are all over number portability and within a few months I am confident they will ahve worked most of the kinks out of the system and number portability will become much more smooth. Once this happens, porting numbers to Vonage should also get much easier.
