I received the Motorola VT2442 that Vonage sent to replace my RTP300 due to the firmware issue. Let me just say that it's now 1:40am and the Motorola will be on it's way back to Vonage tomorrow.

Something as simple as forwarding a port to an internal static IP address shouldn't be that difficult. After working at it for 1.5 hours, I called Vonage customer care for some assistance.

Level one consumed 25 minutes of my life having me change the internal IP address of the mail and web servers and configure IP forwarding.

She dumped me on another guy who immediately (within 60 seconds) dumped me back to another level one person.

Finally, I reached a fourth person who was with Level II support. Fifteen minutes later, my answer was that external traffic can access my web and mail server without issue. Internal traffic now has to route by the static IP address of the box instead of the HTTP domain name or mail.domain.com. When the tech said that there are port forwarding issues with the VT2442, I was left with a decision:

1) Keep the RTP300 and hope that Vonage doesn't pooch my port forwarding again with their buggy firmware release

or

2) Keep the VT2442 (a much better router according to the tech  ) and live with changing my apps to point to IP address instead of name. Keep in mind that this also includes training the wife.

In the wife's opinion, do I keep the box with the blue lights and cross my fingers or keep the box with the green lights and grumble as I change everything.

It's 1:50am. The green lights will be in a box headed back to Vonage in the morning and I'll cross my fingers on the firmware.
