:(

I really wanted to like Vonage. I built a new house last spring and as I was wiring the "smart" accessories such as video and my home network, I took pains to make sure that my telephones were wired in to my central closet and even planned space for the ATA unit in my "smart" closet. In fact, I never even had telephone copper brought in to the house. I wonder if my house was the first one in the country custom wired for Vonage?

Unfortunately, Vonage is not ready for prime time. I have had numerous small problems (yes, I have proper bandwidth and yes, I know how to configure my network). Every week it is something: lack of dial-tone, dropped calls, lost voicemail, etc.

Last week, was just the worst. On Monday, we were notified of the price increase. On Thursday, the entire (602) 445-xxxx exchange simply rang fast-busy. On Friday, I dialed in for voicemail and received 46 urgent messages from another user’s mailbox. Yes, I got someone else’s voicemail! Does this mean that someone else is getting my messages? I'm looking for a job right now and can't afford to miss one call!

In Phoenix, we can get local phone service through Qwest, Cox, or MCI. I hate the thought of giving these huge companies more $$$, but Vonage just doesn't provide the reliability that the average consumer expects from POTS. I really wish that Vonage actually worked. I love the idea of the technology behind Vonage. There is bleeding edge, and then there is all out hemorrhaging.

So, Qwest will be out tomorrow to bring their lines in to my house. As soon as I'm up and running with them, it is goodbye to Vonage.

<Sigh>
