I ran across an old post which had asked (with no response and now "closed") about using Cisco phones with Vonage. Cisco phones can only be used under license with their proprietary SCCP PBX. Some Cisco phones, 7912,40,60,70, and the newer Cisco phones can operate as SIP phones, which in thoery is fine for Vonage, EXCEPT that Vonage want their control in this arena as well and will only use the equipment they sell; one can estimate why. In contacting their corporate offices, as well as speaking with "senior" technical agents, Vonage with the exception of their soft phone lines require their own equipment which are MAC address configured from their distribution point (presumably to prevent customer tampering [read flexibility]) They said it was for "security reasons". So - to make a long story short, if you want the Rolls Royce of telephones, I recommend an asterisk based (open source server based) PBX with the phones in question. [such system WILL require someone with reasonably vast experience as the Cisco phones are VERY difficult to set up - but that is another post on another website] Once you have the PBX software installed and if you want to have an all digital system, one will require a Voip line provider. [After having been a very satisfied Vonage customer for so very long and now having no way to connect my Vonage lines to my new all digital PBX, I chose broadvoice.com as an alternative, that seemed to be friendly to my PBX and worked for me but i am sure there are many more carriers available.] I hope this information has been helpful.
