Vonage I posted the previous message stating that after using the Vonage Softphone for

I posted the previous message stating that after using the Vonage Softphone for nine months, it suddenly stopped working last week. I thought it was a firewall problem, but here is what I found:

In order to isolate the problem, I tried using the Vonage Softphone on two different PCs. I also tried using three different Linksys firewalls, a D-Link firewall, and directly connecting the computers to Road Runner without a firewall. I also tried my laptop at my neighbor's house with a different ISP.

After trying many different configurations, I found out that any equipment configuration that obtained an address in the 69.200.0.0/13 Time Warner Road Runner address range would WORK PERFECTLY and any equipment configuration that obtained an address in the 24.198.0.0/16 Time Warner Road Runner address range would ALWAYS FAIL. Using my neighbor's network also WORED PERFECTLY. So my conclusion is that something is "not right" about the 24.198.0.0/16 address range (or the ability to route to/from that network).

I called Time Warner and they swore that (1) they don't do any sort of port filtering, (2) there is no difference whatsoever between the 69.200.0.0 network and the 24.198.0.0 network, and (3) they didn't make any network router changes in my area in the past two weeks (my problem started about 10 days ago).

So here is my work-around: configure a MAC address on my firewall (through trial-and-error) that obtains an IP address from the 69.200.0.0 network. I'm hoping that whatever problem exists with the 24.198.0 network/routing, won't creep over to the 69.200.0.0 network/routing. I'm also hoping that when restarting my eqiupment, I don't get assigned another 24.198.0.0 network address again.

I think that there is some sort of routing problem, but it's unclear where the problem lies. I know it's not a problem with my equipment! And I don't think that it's a Vonage problem either.

I did a "trace route" over both networks and the path is very similar: Portland Maine -> Albany -> Boston -> New York -> Vonage, but sometimes used different routers in the same location.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem recently?

(In case it's not obvious: both address ranges occupy the same physical network, are served by the same DHCP server, and use the same default router. Time Warner was running out of addresses on the 24.198.0.0 address range, so they added the 69.200.0.0 address range.)
