Vonage I noticed a few posts where people have been talking about VOIP and Ademco security
I noticed a few posts where people have been talking about Voip and Ademco security systems. I have had Vonage for over a year and I have also installed a VISTA 15p security system. When I first talked with security companies they said that their systems do not work with Voip and that might be true for some, but since working in the alarm industry I can tell you that there are some great system that work with Voip. My Ademco 15p works great with Vonage and I have it hooked up so I still get line seizure (alarm takes over the phone line when it needs to report an alarm). I have my Vonage back fed from the router to one jack and then I wired that jack as the incoming phoneline, and this makes it so any phone works in any of my jacks (no need for one of those expandable phone systems). I know that DMP makes an alarm panel that you can connect to your home network and it communicates over the internet instead of the phone line. This is a great option to as you can connect to your network with an ethernet cable, or an optional ethernet to wireless adapter. Anyway I could go on all day about this as I love dealing with this kind of stuff. Do not be scared off, you do have options !!!! You can have Voip and an alarm system if you want to.
Oh, I should mention that some Voip do not work with alarms systems. I tried Packet8 and their system cannot handle the packet size of information that the alarm system needs to send, but if you use Vonage I can tell you that there are alarm systems out there that work fine with it.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
1) If your internet goes down so will your security system (it can't communicate without a phone line, unless you have cellular backup), but my has been pretty reliable so far.
2) Since the Voip doesn't use standard 911 and you have to be on the line to tell the dispatcher your location, it is nice to have an alarm because with an alarm system you can just hit the panic, medical or fire buttom on the keypad and let the alarm company call for you (they will give the dispatcher your address) while you get to safety !!!! Anyone on Voip should really have a security system for this reason alone.
