I'm sorry, after I stopped laughing I started laughing again. Everyone knows I am a Vonage fan, but lately it seems that there is more press than pudding coming out of Holmdel.
It's just like having a cell phone, except it only works in the building!
Seriously, what responsible IT department is going to go with a Vonage solution rather than build their own Voip PBX internally? Why route all internal calls over the Internet? Why pay for a separate phone line for each handset?
If you have one or two people who need to roam around inside the office, ok, maybe this is the right solution for you. But those users had better be burning $25/month of cell phone minutes while in the building and you need to make the conscious decision that it is not better to spend the money up front to purchase a 'free to operate' phone instead.
Also, according to UTStarcomm support the network has to be specifically configured to allow handsets to roam between access points.
The ideal environment for this phone is the residential user with free WiFi access in her apartment. It eliminates the need to add a wireless bridge to connect a standard adapter. A home user is less likely to be able to justify the cost of installing a Voip PBX to offset monthly phone charges and is more likely to need a PSTN number for each handset. In addition the home user's decision is more likely to be swayed by the $50 rebate than a corporate user.
It is my opinion that Vonage is making efforts to lower the expectations for this phone. They are trying to prevent the disappointment that subscribers are going to experience when they try to use the phone at any hotspot that requires some type of user web activity to allow access.
Let's look at some language from a joint Starcom press release from a year ago compare that to the latest release
This brings me to my final point. What does open access mean? Traditionally it has meant an unencrypted access point, but the F1000 handles encrypted access points.
The WiFi Alliance doesn't define this term and no further information about it is available from the UT/Starcom site.
We are led to believe that it refers to no-fee hotspots, but having reviewed as much material about this phone as possible it appears that although UTStarcom has been working on a script capability to facilitate login through access points that require any type of user interaction is not yet available.
Therefore perhaps "open access" actually means hotspots that require no user interaction to establish a true Internet connection. My experience is not that these hotspots are becoming more common, at least not ones intended for legal use, but less common and more and more free providers require you to accept their terms of service.
Finally the autoscan mode is legally questionable. Were you to leave your phone on it would automatically associate with any unprotected access point and immediately register with Vonage. In some states this constitutes illegal use of computer equipment and may be a crime.
