I'm just pissed that Sprint doesn't have generators at their COs in this part of FL, where power outages are sometimes a daily occurance (thanks Flicker Power & Light!) They knew the hurricane was coming, so how 'bout shipping in a few mobile generators to keep things running....or did they think that power isn't going to go out in a Category 3 hurricane? I can (mostly) accept utilities going down in a strong hurricane...BUT, when they survive the hurricane, like the phone system here did, then die because their batteries ran flat... I can't accept that. Piss poor planning.

I've been working some of the emergency operations in the area. Many of the shelters lost power during the height of the storm (expected), went to generator, and everything was fine. In many areas, the phones lines held up for a good 12+ hours after the hurricane had hit...then, nothing. So, the only way to communicate from the shelters to HQ is by ham radio, Voip, or smoke signals. Cell towers depend upon the local power & phone system to be working, so they're becoming useless as well. At some of the shelters, power was restored within hours of the hurricane hitting, in others it was less than 36 hrs before power was restored, and I think we would have seen a faster response if the east coast of FL hadn't sustained such severe damage (haven't they ever heard of building codes over there? but I digress..)

That said... the local governments, Red Cross, and state & local emergency officials have their stuff together and are working wonderfully. Less than 10 hrs after the storm, there were already tree trimmers clearing roadways, road crews were deploying portable generators at major intersection traffic signals & portable stop signs at others, water & ice is readily available. KUDOS to the water dept of Ft. Myers who has kept the water flowing and drinkable 100% of the time, saving disaster relief from having to pass out far more water.

and last but not least... .

I feel very honored to have been on the conference call with local officials and FEMA... in particular, when the local officials on the west coast of FL told FEMA to stay the heck out of our area; we'll call them if we need anything. From the mess and other words not fit to print here, this was a VERY good decision. C'mon FEMA, you had two practice runs this year (Katrina & Rita). All they're looking for on the east coast is water, ice, and fuel... and you can't even get that right! How come a group comprised of mostly unpaid volunteers with no emergency management training, a mostly donation-only budget, and a few local officials can pull it off with a battered & failing communication system, and you guys can't with all of the funding and military resources you guys have? Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Fire 'em all and give our local guys the money & resources.
