I'm a Vonage-Pro customer so I use the Vonage Companion software on my PC and as of yesterday also on my Mac.

The Companion software is nice. Vonage tout it as great for taking your home phone on the road but hey it's not that cool to have to power-up your laptop to make and receive calls. I like it in my home office where I have two desks with multiple computers. I hate the clutter of phones and cables crowding my space. It's nice that I can answer a call without taking my hand off my mouse and reaching a couple of feet or across the room to answer a call.

I was astonished to see that the Companion does not integrate with the default address book on a PC or Mac; instead it has it's own and yes, it does allow you to import and export contacts... but if you're like me you probably don't like duplicating your data and managing it in multiple places... that's so 90's. Today we have API's and Clouds and gadgets and other cool stuff to make our lives a bit easier. Let's hope a future version takes care of this and a few more tidbits.

Last September I bought an iPhone 3G and needless to say I'm very enamored by it. Before I bought it I hunted the internet for options to use it for my Vonage service. I'm still on the hunt and I'm astonished that there is no word from Vonage on this.

I've tried services like Fring and WeePhone (new). It would seem that the SIP credentials for the Vonage SoftPhone service is broadly known but not their Basic or Pro service. (The Softphone service is limited to 500 mins/month and does not include the broad array of features with the traditional plans)

Vonage does not publicize their SIP credentials unlike some of their competitors and it's reasonable to assume that they don't release it to protect their services from any shenanigans from many of you Voip experts out there. They emailed a response to me that "As per the privacy policy of Vonage, SIP credentials will not be provided to customers."
BTW... I read their Privacy Policy and there was no hint of SIP in there... maybe I missed something or their Technical Support is just handy with copy & paste.

I don't understand it myself as SIP uses encryption and uid/pw authentication so I assume it's pretty safe to use. But okay, they have their reason(s) :?

I know
They could release the Vonage Companion for the iPhone and other lovely smart-phones on the market and keep their SIP secrets safe while giving us a legitimate way to use their service on smartphone devices. I imagine this could give a real boost to their subscriber base and help clean up some phone and cable clutter around the house !

For now I'm on the prowl for another service that can give me good quality inexpensive phone service across the US and Europe and a virtual number in another country.

Comments or solutions anyone :?:
