I kind of figured that it might be the WRTP54G when the biggest issue occurred when it was actually in use besides the occasional hiccup to the internet connectivity.
What IP are you trying to ping?
All that you do is connect WRTP54G WAN port to an ethernet port WRT54G. Leave the WRTP54G set to DHCP so it pulls an IP from the WRT54G. Once it gets an IP, that would be the IP that you ping. However, by default, ICMP requests to WAN port are blocked so you wont see a response. YOu would need to connect a PC to a LAN port on the WRTP54G, log into it, and disable the Block WAN Requests from under the security section. You would also need to go to the Administration section and enable Remote Admin if you want to be able to access it's interface from PC's connected to the WRT54G. If you choose to go with a static IP on the WAN port of the WRTP54G, you would need to use the same network as what the WRT54G communicates on.
Example:
IP Address - 192.168.1.200
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
GW - 192.168.1.1
DNS - You can find these on the Status page in the WRT54G
This assuming your WRT54G is using a default IP of 192.168.1.1
Once your phone is working. That is it. Your now only using the WRTP54G as a telephone adapter since nothing is depending upon it for routing function or internet connectivity. However, in this set up, you may notice a decrease in voice quality since you no longer have any QOS.
What you can now do is flash your WRT54G with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. Just make sure you check the hardware version number or your WRT54G and make sure it is on the compatibility list for these 3rd party firmwares. Both of which provide robust features and very good QOS. Make sure to read instructions and feel comfortable doing this before actually performing the firmware flash. Would hate to be the person who recommended it and then you turn it into a brick by messing something up.
Also keep an eye on the WRTP54G. If it continues to drop audio in this set up, it is truly defective and will need to be replaced with another phone adapter.
