Vonage I hope this issue has not been posted (I could not find anything). I’m trying

I hope this issue has not been posted (I could not find anything).

I’m trying to avoid the ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ syndrome. I have 2 incoming phone lines to my house and I’m planning to switch over one to Vonage. I have not found enough information at this point to feel comfortable with doing the installation myself and I don’t want to pay someone to do it because it seems simple enough.

I’d like to hook up the Voip telephone adapter (TA) to the punchdown board in my house so all of the regular phones and all of the telephone jacks that are already there will work. The complication is the house has two incoming telephone lines (A and B) connected to a punchdown board located in an equipment closet (aka the pantry).

A is the residential number that most people call, B is my ‘home office’ number. There are three handsets connected to Line A. Broadband is provided via DSL through line B. The DSL modem and the home network router are also located in the equipment closet.

Each room with telephone jacks has a separate jack for line A and line B. Some of the rooms in the house have RJ45 jacks that connect to the router via Cat 5 cables.

The solution seemed to me to be straightforward:

Disconnect the NID for line A from the punchdown block (or is better to do that at the box outside the house?). Hook the TA up to the router which is connected to the DSL modem connected to Line B via the punchdown board. Schematically, it would go like this:

Line B-> DSL Modem -> Router ->TA -> Punchdown <- Line A Jacks

However, I’m concerned that I’m missing something.

Since I have a single punchdown board for the two lines, I also want to make sure I don’t fry something or short it inadvertently while setting up the TA to the punchdown board.

Any advice, any references to a wiring diagram or photos would be very much appreciated. This is not rocket science, but it requires more knowledge than I have at the moment to feel certain I won’t make a mistake.

BTW - I have read in some places (just recently in PC mag) that you can’t hook your home’s internal telephone wiring to the TA to give all jacks access. I can see where that’s probably the case in houses that do not have a home-run wired system like mine, or where there are too many handsets, but I want to make sure what I am thinking of doing is feasible.

Thanks in advance.
