I have the exact same configuration (Modem -> WRT54G -> WRTP54G). You can turn off the wireless on the WRTP54G without any problems - mine's been turned off for over a year now.

To turn wireless off in the WRTP54G, go into the "Wireless" page and set the wireless mode to "Disabled". To turn it back on, go in and turn it to "Both".

I also have a detailed guide for setting up a WRTP54G behind a WRT54GL (the Linux version of the WRT54G) running aftermarket firmware. If your WRT54G is new, you probably won't be able to run the aftermarket firmware, but the setup instructions on the WRTP54G could be useful for you.

One of the things the instructions above gives you is how to set up "remote administration", which will allow you to access your WRTP54G's setup screens from your WRT54G's network. You can also simply plug a computer into the WRTP54G temporarily if you need to do any setup on it.
