Vonage I have had vonage for about 3 months now and I have gone through about 9 wireless

I have had Vonage for about 3 months now and I have gone through about 9 wireless routers and 5 notebook cards.

Best Buy does not like me. If it doesn't work for me, I take it back!

Here is my take on wireless routers after doing a lot of research (pcworld, computer shopper, forums) and buying a few routers/notebook cards and checking them out.

The bottom line:

If you are going to buy a router for just surfing the web, DON'T spend the extra money on a G model.
It's like hooking a 6 inch sewer pipe to your 1/2 inch water faucet on the side of your house. The data is not going to flow any faster to your computer because the B models already have the bandwidth capable of carrying the entire bandwidth your isp can feed you. Now if your transferring media from another computer in your house, that's a different story. If your just using for web surfing, go with the cheaper B model. linksys B models seems to be a good price/range ratio for a B model.

Go with the Netgear 511 G card for the notebook though. It does have the best range when your out and about for B and G networks alike.

I for one AM interested in the higher bandwidth because I transfer all types of media to/from this wireless router to other computers on my network.

Now we come the the most overlooked part of buying a router.
To me this is one of the most important features.

Does it work when you leave the room?

D-link (very user friendly) has horrible range but cheap.
Linksys B models are not bad but not the best.
SMC's are fantastic (I mean knock your socks off, range). good price.
Netgear is normally the premium model but they are a little more pricey.
You can never go wrong with a netgear.

So after all the research I have done I found the following combination to have the best "bang for your buck" with range being top priority and price being the second.

Netgear 511 G adapter for my notebook.
SMC Barricade 2048 G router.

(Don't forget to upgrade the firmware)

Every combination that I have tried, I could not maintain a connection sitting on my living room couch except for this combination.
With this combination, I can walk over to my neighbors house 120 feet away and still pull 24MB/s at 55% strength. WOW!
Yes, I did upgrade the firmware to every model that I bought.

Oh, another thing about d-link.
This is where you have to be careful if your going to buy a D-link.
They change their hardware but are too cheap to change the name of the router for advertising I suppose. They have multiple revisions of each type of hardware. If you are set on buying a D-link. Look through every model on the shelf for the latest HW rev no. It's like milk when you go to the store. later the HW Rev no the better off you will be. The latest firmware out for that model may not support earlier HW revisions even thought it's the same model number. That just plain sucks!

Now I have finally found a router/card combination that works and guess what...
Vonage seems to work with it as well.
