I have called the "golden phone" for testyourvoip's Boston location (which is VERY close to me) several times from my Vonage line and have gotten mixed results. The results are usually anywhere from 1.5 to 3.2, which isn't very good. Yet oddly enough when I call the Los Angeles phone number I'm a rock solid 4.4 even though it is all the way on the other side of the country. Any ideas on why the Boston results are so much worse than the LA results? I'm just curious if this is the reason that my local calls are not as good as my long distance calls. My friends in California, Texas, and Florida have never experienced a bad call from me. Trust me, I'm always ask them. lol Yet friends I call in my local area (New England) have complained about the quality (echos, garbled voice, etc) before I could even ask them about it. Of course this doesn't happen on every call, just some of them.

Now it's my understanding that Vonage contracts with a couple different companies to route their calls from New Jersey to the local PSTN you are calling. So say I make a call to my neighbor. I dial his number and my call traverses the internet to Vonage's NJ servers. From there my call is routed over Willtel's network (which is the actual carrier BTW) to the PSTN gateway closest to my area, then onward to my neighbor who then tells me that I sound awful.

How do I know I'm using Willtel? I used my router logs and looked up the server that was interfacing with my PAP2 during a couple local calls. It's Wiltel's gateway (wcg.net) at Vonage that completed the incoming and outgoing voice portion of the calls. Vonage's servers only act as the control for the call.

So now say I call Los Angeles. My call once again is routed via the internet to Vonage in NJ. My call then travels from NJ to LA via WIltel's network once again. But obviously this time it's terminating into a different PSTN gateway than my previous call. And each and every time I make a call Los Angeles my call quality is excellent. Why? Because I'm using the same PSTN gateway and Wiltel call route every time I call.

That being said, perhaps most of our poor call quality problems lie with the contracted carriers' networking and PSTN interfaces in some areas, rather than Vonage themselves. That would explain why our complaints aren't able to be resolved right away. Wiltel and the others would have to admit fault first which might not be so easy. I can remember when the company I used to work for was implementing a program upgrade. The program upgrade was a complete disaster. Both my company and the company that created the upgrade were pointing the finger at each other for weeks. It was weeks before the programmer finally admitted that it was their fault. So I can only imagine what Vonage has to go through to get these issues resolved.

Any thoughts?
