I have been reviewing all of the posts for about 2 days to try and figure out why I can't Vonage to work properly. I will give you the background information and then move into the problems that I am having and the troubleshooting that I have done personally.

1. I am on temporary assignment in Hyderabad India. Will be here for quite a while. The reason I took Vonage was to stay connected to friends, family and business associates.
2. Signed up at the end of January. After some shipping and customs delays I got the RT31P2 Adapter.
3. I use a local ISP line that gives me a guaranteed 128 Kbps line. What this company did was ran Cat-5 cabling from a box in my neighborhood directly into my house. It plugs directly into my LAN port. I do not have any kind of broadband or DSL router. The tech support guy set up a static IP line on the router. I can surf the net fine through the router.
I have hooked the ISP's line directly into the router and then connected the ethernet cables from the router to the computer, and plugged the phone into Phone Port 1.


1. Most of the time I get this loud white noise/digital static/Wirr, Wirr, Wirr Sound. Sometimes you can faintly hear the dial tone in the background sometimes you cannot. I have tried plugging a second phone into the 2nd phone port and taking it off the hook. Does not help. Still get the noise on line 1, and also can hear the same noise on line 2. I have tried grounding out a RJ11 plug. Again no help, still the same noise on Line 1 and Line 2.

2. A few times I have actually got a full dial tone to come through without the white noise/digital static/Wirr, Wirr, Wirr sound. I am able to dial through and on my account with Vonage it shows the calls went through. In addition I can hear people on the other end of the line very clearly, however they cannot hear anything I say.

3. By the way, the best luck I have had with getting the phone to work is to unplug the ethernet cable from the router. Although it was working with the ethernet cable in the router earlier, but then the white noise/digital static etc. came so heavily I list the dial tone.

So my questions are:

1. How do I get rid of this white noise? I have also moved all my cables away from each other and kept them about 3 feet (all the ethernet cable will allow from the computer and all electrical outlets.

2. How can I get the phone so that people on the other end of the line can hear me?

3. If based on this forum, this router is no good, what would be a recommened router I could purchase. Linksys does have distributors in India, and if there is something better then Linksys then I will look into buying it as well. Motorola, ATA, etc. We run Voip at work, so I can check with our vendors to find most products (altough they are about double the price.)

4. If I do buy a different router in India will I have to send it to Vonage for any kind of configuration, or can that be done remotely.

Well let me know what you think. If you have any other additional questions I will try to answer them, but it is night time here, and I am going out of town tommorrow, so it might take me a day to get back to you.
