I have been a Vonage subscriber for about 5 years. I had been paying with a prepaid Mastercard up until this summer. Even with the card's monthly fee, deposit transaction fee, and purchase transaction fee, Vonage was still cheaper over-all than anything else out there. When my card came up for renewal I looked for other options and tried a $25 RBC Visa Gift Card. Everything went fine with my July payment (you can't use it for recurring transactions. I got the 'account charge error' email on my invoice date and paid online on the Vonage site with the gift card.)

Now it's August and I have a problem. I purchased a $30 card and had it ready for my invoice date. When I went to the website and tried to pay $22.59 the card was declined. The actual error message was something about 'unable to verify your credit card information.' I tried phoning in the payment and was told the card was being declined for insufficient funds. $30.00 - $22.59 = ?????

I called the customer service number for the card (in Florida) and was told they add $15.00 to any authorizations for telecommunications services to cover additional charges such as long distance fees and the $15.00 is released when the transaction clears. I asked why it went through in July and was told 'the system didn't flag it.' I was also <strike>lied to</strike>told that it appears in the cardholder agreement and the pamphlet that I <strike>did not</strike> get with the card.

I just got off the phone with RBC customer service here in Canada. The cards are a third-party retail product that they have no control over. I also called Vanilla and was assured that their Mastercard gift card DOES NOT have this $15.00 hold. Looks like I'll use my $30.00 RBC card to buy a $25.00 Valilla Mastercard and see how that works.
