I have a Vonage softphone account, which I occasionally use as a softphone on my laptop, but more often use by entering the SIP credentials into a Linksys PAP2-NA. I have a Broadvoice BYOD account on the other port of the PAP2-NA with no conflicts or issues. Both work great on the PAP2-NA, and both can also be used as softphones. The Vonage softphone account works better on the PAP2-NA than on my laptop, which I think is to be expected. This is since the PAP2-NA (and most other analog telephone adapters or ATAs) has hardware (or firmware?) digital signal processing (DSP) for the Voip CODECs while any PC software phone must make do with software running on the shared general purpose CPU.

I don't have a V-phone (not willing to spring for a 5th Vonage service just yet), but I suspect that it's basically just a memory stick that still uses the PC to do its processing without benefiting from the hardware DSP of a real ATA. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about the lack of hardware DSP on the V-phone. BTW, does Vonage provide easy access to the V-phone SIP credentials as they do for the Vonage softphone, or is it basically locked like the Vonage-provisioned ATAs?

I have a Vonage primary account on a Vonage-provisioned Linksys PAP2 in addition to the Vonage softphone on the Linksys PAP2-NA. Vonage won't permit a softphone as your only account, and have stuck with the reprehensible business decision not to release SIP credentials to primary accounts. They also won't permit you to use the Vonage softphone on an unused port of your already owned Vonage-provisioned device, which is actually quite silly IMHO. Hence, my PAP2-NA solution and the extra provider.

Some have temporarily hacked their device at one time or another and gained access to their SIP credentials. Thus, those folks might be able to make do with just the Vonage main line without buying an additional softphone line. I do not recommend that practice since it's too time consuming and some say questionable ethically and/or legally.

However, you can move the Vonage softphone between any software phone (so-so call quality in my experience) and any unlocked hardware adapter (usually excellent quality, although Vonage was quite stingy with the setup criteria so I had to experiment a lot to get it working well on the PAP2-NA). My Vonage softphone on the PAP2-NA has equal call quality to my main Vonage line, and is often more reliable when traveling (probably due to simplistic Voip blocking by certain ISPs in some areas of the world).

The PAP2-NA is "unlocked" from the factory, and will remain so if purchased from a reputable online dealer such as voxilla.com or voipsupply.com. As a general rule DON'T get it from any Voip service provider, some of which have been known to poke holes in the shrink-wrap to change the passwords and lock it to their own service. As explained to me by a Best-Buy manager, unlocked phone adapters are generally not available in North American walk-in retail stores due to the lack of promotional discount to the stores (kick-backs?) from Voip providers! I have some questions about the ethics and legality of that practice, but further discussion of that topic might be slightly off-topic here.
