Vonage I have a V-Tech mi6897 that has a built-in answering machine. The device shows

I have a V-Tech mi6897 that has a built-in answering machine. The device shows the voicemail indicator for EITHER the internal voice mail system or an external voicemail system. It works absolutely great with Vonage, and tells me when I have voicemail by showing the message "NEW VOICE MAIL" on the speakerphone base and all handsets until I check the voice mail. It takes a while for the message to go away after checking the voicemail (maybe about a minute or two), but I expect this is pretty normal.

I have no idea how well the internal answering machine works - it's never been turned on. But the rest of the system works exceptionally well.

I think most cordless systems, even those with built-in answering machines, are starting to recognize voicemail signal from the phone line. I can't speak for all of them, of course - my old AT&T system from only two years ago was completely incapable of it - it only recognized its own voice mails from the (also never-used) built in answering system.

My criteria for a system when I purchased the VTech:
1. Must have a good speakerphone system with a MUTE button. I live too much of my life on conference calls not to have a functional MUTE, and amazingly few speakerphones have it. Panasonic, my #1 favorite brand historically, does not put a MUTE button on their speakerphone bases...
2. Must not be 2.4GHz - Wifi network.
3. Must be able to indicate voice mail clearly.
4. Must have at least two handsets so I can stop using my home wiring (system came with three).

The VTech was actually the only system capable of meeting those needs, surprisingly enough. Plus I have a decent speakerphone on all three cordless handsets, an address book that's shared between the base and the three handsets (a BIG step up from my old AT&T system!), and an intercom that works exceptionally well. The range is pretty darned impressive, too. I live in an aluminum-sided house, and the signal cuts through the walls like they aren't there. I can use a cordless phone outside - and that's a Big Deal for me.

Moreover, it was cheap. I've never been a fan of the VTech brand, but I've had it for a couple of months now and nothing has broken (starts searching around for a block of wood to knock on, finds own head, knocks).

I'd still have preferred a Panasonic as a brand - their phones have always served me very well and I have a pretty deep brand loyalty to them, but they simply don't make a phone system I can use.
