Vonage I have a Motorola SB5120 and I am now running into the imfamous call drop out problem.



I have a Motorola SB5120 and I am now running into the imfamous call drop out problem. I searched the forums and many people suggested just buying another modem. Are any cable modems known to work better with Vonage?

Here is my setup:
cable > Moto SB5120 > Linksys RT31P2

I have TimeWarner Cable modem (recently bought out from Comcast)

Firmware SB5120-2.19.0.6-SCM05-NOSH
Firmware RT31P2 1.30.01

Here is the Vonage upload/download test when NOT using the Voip I get:

Speed test statistics

Download speed: 6803032 bps
Upload speed: 984712 bps
Quality of service: 65 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 67 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 55 ms
Average round trip time to server: 91 ms

Voip test statistics
-
Jitter: you -> server: 4.5 ms
Jitter: server -> you: 9.5 ms
Packet loss: you -> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server -> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 16
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

When I am using the Voip I get a 10X drop in the upload rate (verified this multilple times):

Quality of service: 97 %

Maximum download pause: 51 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 55 ms

Jitter: server -> you: 9.5 ms
Packet loss: you -> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server -> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 1
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I have run this comparison several time and I always see about a 10X drop in my upload rate.

When I consider this data and all the problems reported for the SB5120 I think the problem is in the SB5120.

I suspect your problem is the RT31P2, not the cable modem. The SB5120 is a VERY common
docsis recommended is ver 1.1 and about drop calls... try to avoid the use of
