I hate to jump in late and confuse this issue but there is one other factor that could be affecting your outbound call quality. There can be a problem on sufficiently slow outbound links where a relatively small voip packet has to wait for a larger data packet to be sent on the outbound link even when qos is enabled. This is the case when a high priority voice packet arrives to the scheduler after the larger data packet has started transmission. This can result in increased latency for that packet and larger jitter on the voice flow. Some simple math can highlight this phenomenon. Say your outbound link is 256Kbps, your average voice packet is 200 bytes, and your average data packet is 1500 bytes (the default MTU on Windows XP for ethernet links). At 256Kbps your link can send 256000/8=32000 bytes per second. If you divide by 1000 you get 32 bytes per millisecond. A voice packet may have to wait for up to 1500/32=46.875 ms for a large outbound data packet to be sent. If your outbound link is slower the 256k in reality, it only worsens the problem. There are three ways to fix this: 1 Send voice only without data on the link (unacceptable) 2 Buy really expensive routers at both ends of the link that are capable of fragementing large packets and interleaving small packets between them. (only works if you have lots of money you are willing to spend on this and own the routers at both ends of the link) 3 Change the MTU on the machines that are generating the data traffic. I would suggest setting it to 576 bytes as this is an old standard MTU from the early dial-up days. You need to check how this is done on whatever operating system you are running. This will result in slower upload speeds due to the increased overhead inherent in using more packets to send the same amount of data. This is something else that is both simple and under your control that you can try. It may help, it may not. I have used it successfully on slower speed links in private networks in the past.
