Vonage I had (have) the same problem. I signed up for Vonage on Dec 23 and asked them to port

I had (have) the same problem. I signed up for Vonage on Dec 23 and asked them to port my number from Verizon.

About a week later Vonage told me that they could not port the number because I had a FX feature on that line. When I called Verizon they told me that the only way to remove the FX was to disconnect that number and get a "local" number. Vonage told me that if I did that they I could not transfer the number because it was no longer an active number. They also reiterated that there was no way that they could port a number that had a FX feature.

Why is my number a Foreign Exchange (or FX)? Before this I had no idea that my number was a FX or what that was. I did some research. A Foreign Exchange number is a arrangement that allows you to have a phone number that is not local to your area and has a different calling area (and possibly) billing rate.

How did my number become a Foreign Exchange? I am not sure but I think it is because 10 years ago I move 1.5 miles from an apartment to a townhouse. I kept the number when I moved. My old number was a 803 exchange. The new neighborhood that I was moving into was in the 830 exchange. Even though the CO for these two exchanges are in the same building my moving my old number caused my line to be marked as a "Foreign Exchange" number.

I decided to try something to get my number ported over to Vonage. It has not ported over yet but I did get the email from Vonage that says the port has been approved and it will be cut over this week We will see.

Here is what I did. On Jan 4 I called Verizon. I told them that I was trying to port my number to Vonage and they could not do that unless I removed the FX feature from my line. The customer service rep told me that she would have to give me a new local number. I asked what would happen to the old number. She said I had the option of having it play a message "this number has been changed" for 60 days after the change. I figured that if this message was playing that my old number could not be re-assigned and it would still be linked to my account. This might allow Vonage to get the number. The FX feature would be removed from my line and it would still be an active number. I told Verizon to make the change. It took a week and a half for the FX removal to be cut over by Verizon.

On Jan 16 I called Vonage and told them that the FX feature had been removed from my line and gave them the confirmation number from Verizon for this change.

On Jan 22 I received an email telling me that my number transfer had been approved and it would be cut over the week of Jan 30 (this week). I am still waiting but I am hopeful. I guess I will have to wait and see which number they got (the old one that I want or my new local number).

If others are having this type of problem with a Verizon FX to Vonage transfer it may be worth trying this strategy out. I will report back when the transfer takes place.
