I had an ADT technician come out today to try to get my alarm working (it hasn't been able to communicate since I switched to Vonage). Long story short - it's not supported. Period.

Here are the facts of my situation:

1) Vonage advertisement says you CAN use your home alarm. See URL, item (1):
"Q: Can I use your service with my home alarm system?
A: Yes, you can. But we recommend that you keep a basic telephone line to support your home alarm system."

2) Vonage technical support says they do NOT officially support the use of an alarm (I didn't write down the name of the tech support gentleman I spoke with).

3) The alarm hardware CAN do all of the following successfully:
a) Seize the line
b) Dial out to the ADT monitoring number
c) "Hear" the "I'm ready, go ahead" signal from the monitoring station

4) The alarm hardware CANNOT then complete it's "handshake" and send the alarm information. The monitoring station doesn't "see/hear" the alarm panel - even though the panel called it up OK.

5) Using a *99 prefix ("data mode" for the Vonage ATA/service) does NOT solve the situation.

6) The ADT technician CANNOT "slow down" the alarm. The speed required is determined by the monitoring end, which is set up to expect a certain speed/type of alarm panel hardware.

7) ADT technical support officially does NOT support monitoring "over the Internet", as "it's too unstable". (Get a grip guys, Voip is catching on...)

That's the scoop. I have no clue yet whether I'm going to drop Vonage, or get a local landline. (The cheapest basic landline cost is $15/mo, which puts me back to where I was before I switched, and Vonage charges a $40-ish disconnect fee, which my guess is I'll have zero luck getting them to drop that charge since I'm past my first 14 day period).

Also, I would suggest NOT holding out for Vonage to solve the TiVo/DirectTV situation either. If it can't handle the super slow communications of an alarm panel, I highly doubt they'll be able to support the 56kbps modems of those appliances.

While the technology is interesting, I'll now give a thumbs-down to anybody that asks my opinion. It's just not ready to supplant POTS.
