I had ATT for local, local toll and LD, meaning they had the total dial tone. Switched to Vonage at the suggestion of my twenty-something son who used it for a couple of months before I did.
I read this forum before the switch, which caused me to sit on pins-and-needles for the whole two weeks, but here's how it went:
Called instead of using web - got them to waive the set-up and give me the adapter for free - shipping = $14.95 total cost!
Two business days later, DHL delivers adapter.
10 minutes later, I have dial tone on the adapter with a virtual number (temporary).
Next day, my vonage phone rings with someone calling my waiting-for-transfer number - Another vonage customer! Apparantly my transfer number worked on the vonage system immediately even though ATT still had all other incoming calls to the copper wire.
9 days later, all calls to the old number ring on vonage line.
10 days later, dial tone disappears on ATT copper wire.
Transfer complete!
I just checked the update page and vonage hasn't registered the completion yet, but everything is working great.
Great call quality and shared band-width doesn't seem to be a problem even though I send and receive 5MB e-mails regularly during the day.
I'm a believer now. Don't read the rest of this forum until AFTER you've waited the 10-14 days.
