Vonage I got fed up of running down to the basement everytime i get a phone call so i figured

I got fed up of running down to the basement everytime i get a phone call so i figured I'm just gonna start stripping some wires and connect them together. I opened my NID and it looked like this
thats the customer side. As you can see there is no plug in the test jack so i have no idea how to disconnect from verizon. So i opened the side for the telephone company using a socket wrench and this is how it looks like

since i didn't want to fry my ATA i yanked out the cat 5 wires that were originally hanging from the ceiling and hooked them up to the junction box. the connected the junction box into my Vonage line and it works fine. my question is. one of the jacks in the living room is wired using orange and orange/white wires. is it ok that i put it in the same screw terminal as the blue/bluewhite wires? also i noticed that the NID was grounded by a ground wire. will my ATA be safe from power surges? i hooked it up to a surge protector power bar. btw steve48 ur completely right. paying verizon to hook up an NID is completely useless arrrgh :evil: im cancelling my verizon account tomorrow. thanks so much for the help guys!
