I get inquiries from folks all the time, and they ask me to send things via fax, or through laborsome encryption. They argue that the Internet is unsafe, and that "anyone" could intercept a message and read it.

Really? Have you read about ANYONE actually doing this? I sure haven't. You know, you'd think this would be in the papers somewhere - messages being snatched from the ether. If it were that easy to do, you'd think that intercepted Internet messages would be published all over the place - to the embarrassment of celebrities and government officals.

Heck, you'd think the STAR or NATIONAL ENQUIRER would have a full-time team on this....

But you just don't see that happening. Not even once. At least not that I've heard about.

Data on the Internet is sent in packets, through an uncertain path of various nodes. A single message may be routed through a number of different nodes, and the packets reassembled at the destination. So there is no predictive way to intercept 100% of all data packets of one message 100% of the time, unless you can tap into a node at the sending end or receiving end of the message.

And even if you could get all the packets, you'd have to be on-line when the data is being transmitted, and be searching for packets with a particular address on them. In short, it is no easy proposition. You'd have to be looking for data from a particular person and be searching for it. Your ISP could do this.

Of course, they say that roughly half of all Internet traffic passes through Northern Virginia, home of the CIA. So I guess they could probably do a bang-up job of intercepting messages as well.

But the kid down the street hacking with his old PC? I seriously doubt it.

If you are using an cordless telephone, THAT can be easily hacked, particularly the older ones. Anyone with a scanner (or the same model phone) can listen in to your conversations.

Just my 2 cents. If you can point to a specific example of an internet message (voice, e-mail, whatever) being intercepted by a non-governmental third party, I'd really like to see it. Seriously. I've heard this rumor for ages, but never seen any hard evidence.

Thinking about Vonage...

Hello all, New guy here. ;) I've been thinking about going with Vonage for
yes it's possible as noted in all the setup guides at vonage.com and here. I can
Thanks for the reply :) Yeah, I've heard that the TA behind a Router will work
there are lots of voip providers. the only thing about being behind a router
Be careful. All QoS on the router will do is give you priority bandwidth to the modem.
Yes, Voice over IP can save you tons of money. I have a friend that uses it up in Pennsylvania
Thanks for the replies, guys. Security is not my main concern, as this line
I have had Vonage service going on 5 months now and have experienced no difficulties
You're right, VoIP can be cracked or listened to relativly easily. Companies
Some VoIP do end to end encryption (like Skype).
