I fortunately have my home Vonage wiring working perfectly (for now), but have a new problem. My job is requiring that I accept a new Cisco Router and Avaya IP Phone to handle my business calls from home.

I need to place those devices in my den, which is directly above the patch panel in my basement where everything is pulled. Currently, I have 2 cat5e wires pulled to the den, 1 is for data, the other for voice.

I'm going to need another data connection in the den for the new Cisco box and it will be very challenging to put another wire through the existing hole in the plate for the other 2 cables (it's an exterior wall). I'm thinking I remember that 100baseT doesn't use all 4 pairs in the cable, so can I essentially split that cat5 voice cable? I'm thinking if I leave the 1 pair in place connected to the RJ11, but then pull 2 pair into a new RJ45 jack in the wall, then mirror that split in the patch panel, this might save me from putting a new hole in my brand new home. (Still has the new paint smell).

Any thoughts on this?
