Vonage I doubt this will ever happen completely. Phone numbers themselves are obsolete

I doubt this will ever happen completely. Phone numbers themselves are obsolete interfaces to the PSTN. Why should you have to have a number? Vonage is a bit of a kludge in that it is fitting Voip into the old PSTN scheme, but I imagine that once Voip interconnects become popular Vonage is going to allow you vanity SIP addresses ( so that you can be contacted from any service, not just PSTN compatible services.

Eventually we will see the phone keypad done away with and it will be common for you to either speed dial contacts by voice or use voice assisted automated 411 services.

You: "Call Jim"
Phone: "Jim Smith? Dialing Jim Smith at home"
You: "No, call him at his boat."
Phone: "Calling Jim Smith at his boat."

- or -

You: "Call Diane Jones at Acme, Inc."
Phone: "Calling Diane Jones of Acme, Inc."

- or -

You: "Call Bruce Baker"
Phone: "There are three Bruce Bakers in your local directory."
You: "More information please."
Phone: "Bruce Baker at 123 Elm Street"
Phone: "Bruce Baker at 1553 Maple Avenue"
Phone: "Bruce Baker ..." {interrupted}
You: "Maple Avenue"
Phone: "Calling Bruce Baker on Maple Avenue"

- or -

You: "Call galion at Vonage dot com"
Phone: "Calling galion at Vonage dot com"
Phone: "galion at Vonage dot com is on the phone, ring through or leave voicemail?"
You: "Voicemail, please."
Phone: "Record your message."

What happens will depend a lot on how the ILECs migrate their customers to Voip. It is likely that they will implement a cable company like solution that involves a separate packet data circuit terminated in a NID with a built in adapter. If this happens once Voip companies have already moved out of the compatibility phase we are currently in then the ILECs will be forced to adopt Voip identification techniques and provide more advanced user interface terminals. However if the ILECs move rapidly into Voip they will attempt to keep numbering schemes in place because it gives them some control over the marketplace.

If the ILECs drag their feet long enough then the Voip will have progressed to the point of having advanced multi-handset phone units capable of Voip type call placement. If that is the case then the ILECs will have to offer similar levels of functionality to their customers or leave them with little means to call others.

What key features will encourage users to drop straight PSTN compatability you ask? advanced call routing (calls are placed to people not physical locations or devices) presence indicators (have you noticed the convergence of IM and Voip) competent voice recognition from automated systems automatically synced contact lists (contacts easily exchanged via proximity or via scheduling tools available on all your phones) multiple vanity addresses per account (everyone in the family has a different address and presence indicators)

You also must factor in the biggest reason to abandon the PSTN numbering scheme. With the proliferation of telephony devices we are continually running out of numbers and having to split area codes. We already abandoned some of the early rules for area code numbering that were required to operate the old mechanical switches.

Actually if you think about it, setting up a virtual number is more than just typing
Try getting the virtual number deal with any of the "traditional" phone companies.
In the meantime, I paid $10 to get a virtual number. :-D We'll see if my family actually
