I don't see anything in that ad about free months, so I can't comment on that. As for activation costs, there won't be any that I can see. I had to pay a $30 fee when I received my kit via the mail directly from Vonage, but I guess that's rolled into your package. You do pay your first month's cost up front (unless your free months will prevent that).

It costs $10 to switch plans, the exception being right now to UPgrade from either the $15 or $25 limited plans to the unlimited $30, that fee is waived through the end of May.

As for cancellation fees, there's a temporary charge that's refunded when they receive your adapter back in good condition.

As for ongoing fees, there's Federal Excise tax and some sort of "regulatory recovery fee." My $15 per month service costs me $17.24, bottom line.

That can vary. My Michigan SBC line took just over three weeks. Some people with Southern Bell have taken several months. It seems to be more a problem with some POTS providers than others. No idea about AT&T.

You should tell them you intend to transfer your number as soon as you activate your service, this will put your present POTS phone number on your outgoing calls' caller ID data. You'll still receive incoming calls on the POTS line, of course, but you won't send mixed messages.

You can delay the actual transfer as long as you want by stalling on faxing in the transfer paperwork (completed form and a copy of your latest bill). One caveat: Vonage requires that the name on the bill match the name of the person requesting service. If they don't match they won't port the number. If it isn't already, get the number in your own name (or just forget porting altogether and get a new number).

BTW, if you DO go for a new number you're intending to keep, advise them on what city you want it local to. Check their website for possibilities. They'll automatically give you a number with the right area code, but it may not be a local call for your next door neigbor.

No costs to port.

Yeah, like I said that could be a hangup. If he filled out the form for the port but the number and billing was in your name that MIGHT mess things up. Best to call customer support on that.

Not that I can think of.

Look forward to hearing how things went. Good luck.
